One of the very first things we did when we got a PC was look up Joe Cartoon, Stickdeath and Newgrounds (A site I thought was too "right wing" and refused to have anything to do with for another decade) flash animations. Naturally, I wanted to start making my own, based on the stupid stories about Shinra we were making up on the school bus. Unfortunately I didn't have the faintest idea of how to go about it, and after a false start where I asked my friend how I could make "internet animations" and he recommended Klik N Play (which is for making offline games), I finally got a "free trial" version of an animated gif maker, and got started. All of these pre-date the Insanity Please comic (possibly even Insanity Classic). The oldest of them might even be from 1999! I was definitely still at school when the first two or three were uploaded. |
Only the second or third gif animation I ever made (the other two were general Anarchy related ones, at least one of which was about the FBI covering up aliens). The title types itself out, then a Magitek armour blows up Narshe. |
Made (partly) in an unregistered copy of Photoshop or Paintshop Pro I had at the time. A Shinra soldier gets his head blown off in a battle, that's about it. |
Kenny says Shinra sucks, so a bunch of snipers shoot him. |
An explanation of how Terra got green hair. I used the same gag in the Insanity Please comic. Some of the text in this one goes by too fast, so be careful not to blink! I also wasn't sure what art style to go with... |
The Sex Pistols enter a film for a film festival, but Sid mixes up the tapes and accidentally gives them his psychotic cookery class video instead. Also features the MST3K characters. |
Cloud and Celes have to escape from a heavily-guarded Shinra facility after a bit of mild terrorism. This joke was stolen from The Simpsons. |
Nothing to do with Insanity Please, but there's nowhere else to put it. An amalgamation of an old cartoon from Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine, crossed with an article I read about the signals Earth is beaming out into space. |
The film Sid Vicious made for the festival. |
Shinra racing with somebody (probably Terra) to try and get to some sort of secret weapon first. |
Sabin and Terra try to pull off the coolest-looking murder. At one point I was actually proud of how gory and offensive this was. By 2006 the likes of Scum Slaughter made it look very run-of-the-mill. |
One of the popular girls at my school spent the last 6 months or so there transparently pretending to fancy me and trying to give me her phone number (actually that of a boy who had changed schools, I still wardialed it). Anyway I made this as a hyper-violent revenge fantasy... several months after I'd finished at school and would never see her again. Also mentions somebody called "Terry", I have no idea who that was meant to be. |
Since revived as Postman Prat, elsewhere on this site. He was actually a stupid idea my friends and I came up with on the school bus, which was in turn based on a barely-remembered Harry Enfield sketch about the Italian Postman Pat (who lived in the Fascist era). For years I misremembered that sketch as being about the East German Postman Pat. Anyway, this one features the early 20th century Anarchist writer Emma Goldman. |
Shinra overreacts to some odd Anarchist graffiti somewhat, so Terra ups the ante. And kills Kenny again. |
Terra and Edgar take on the Phantom Forest from Final Fantasy 6 in a more interesting way. |
Does not involve any depiction of Welcome Break service stations... just Edgar shooting somebody's head off. |
The guys from MST3K "do" the Graffiti Patrol animation. |
Are you ready for... AMSTRAD? A ripoff of a mis-remembered Amiga advert a friend on the school bus said he'd seen on a video in history class. |
Inspired by characters from the Lock, Stock TV series, which only 3 people in the whole world appear to have actually watched. Re-release the DVD! My brother fucked up our old copy by being "funny" and spinning the discs in the box, scratching them to buggery. |
Ripped off from Monty Python |
And again |
And again |
Terra and Sabin defeat Shinra soldiers by exploiting their own stupidity. |
Aeris shoots a Shinra soldier with a railgun. |
When I heard about the movie National Lampoon's Golf Punks, I thought it would be about mowahawked maniacs tearing up a golf course while pissed, but actually it was crap. So I made this instead. |
A gag ripped off from SSDD, only with the humour removed. |
A crap one about a train being delayed. |
A gag ripped off from an old Anarchist webcomic (might have been the first webcomic I ever read, actually) called Fishbait. A later strip had the main character's mother shouting "I made you bacon and eggs for breakfast, so I hope you aren't still on that vegan kick after all these months!". I side with the mother. |
A parody of the Screwfix Direct adverts that were on many UK satellite TV channels at the time. With added ultraviolence. The guy getting a nail hammered in his head is based on the worst bully at my school... who later wiped himself out drunk-driving. Also the original version of this had my actual phone number on it, I wondered if anybody would call me, but nobody did. |
Terra and Cloud talk about the state of Final Fantasy releases in the UK at that time... basically we weren't getting Final Fantasy Anthology, which collected some of the old NES and SNES games on the Playstation (with added FMV). Also there was a rumour that 6 and 7 were going to be remade with the graphical quality of 8 (which was barely a step up from 7), which I beleived implicitly for some reason. Anyway, we later did get various old Final Fantasies on the Playstation, GBA and mobile. |
A trailer for the animations you have already watched. |
What is on level 13 of the Shinra Tower? |
Based on a couple of seconds of the I Like Truckin' sketch from Not The Nine 'O Clock News, an old British comedy show. |
A gag stolen from SSDD. |
Terra gets pissed off with waiting for things I was waiting for online at the time. Namely a further Miss Dynamite flash animation (did eventually come out) and DooM MillenniuM ("Due October 1999" and then "to be released before Doom 3"), which never did. Heh, the Miss Dynamite forum was a funny place when the rapper Ms Dynamite was big, journalists kept emailing a very White and very male Canadian cartoonist to ask him about the British Black female experience. Remember, these journalists are better than us, they do meticulous research to get at the truth! We can trust them implicitly! |
Another gag ripped off from SSDD. |
Terra blows up another Shinra building, this time with a Tek Missile. |
