Book 3: Bridge Action / Revenge
|
This story is not quite as pointless as number 2... just! It's set in England, apparently. Actually its just an empty, flat, grassy plain. |

It begins at a very flimsy-looking bridge with a tank parked on it, someone in the tank says "New troops coming", and someone else says "Drat". We're in Dastardly and Muttley territory, now! A 'futuristic' (curvy) lorry with huge wheels pulls up. Gunn gets out and meets Jackson, from the previous story. He asks if she remembers him and she says "How could I forget?". I sense a joke was delivered. |

Suddenly, a guy standing further up the bridge gets his head disintegrated by a heavy machine gun. He says "Glab"... it's a change from "Urg", I suppose. "Emny" boats are approaching, so everyone starts shooting at them. The Tank fires a shell blows one of them up. But "The other boats still in" and the gunner on it shoots a few Wolf Force guys with it's mounted heavy machine gun. Gunn, ignoring an explosion mere inches from his arse, shoots the gunner off the second boat. The third boat, which looks more high-tech and dangerous, hasn't even been touched yet. Gunn dramatically says "Grenade", and blows away the second boat. Then the high-tech third boat finally fires it's tank-like cannon and destroys the bridge. |

Gunn survives, but has lots of cuts and bruises, so he can wear "hard" bandages for a few parts. An ambulance in the background looks like it's from World War 1! The next page begins a new story, called Revenge, though it follows directly on from the previous one. Gunn is flying a weird-looking plane (the design was inspired by a garden trowel) towards a sort of pier thing, which is presumably where the boats came from. Radar has detected him, as someone on the pier helpfully reports that "Wolf force are approaching". They don't seem to bother doing anything about it, though. The pier gets obliterated in a giant explosion. Captions explain that one of the wolf force planes was... a plane, and the other was a giant cruise missile flying next to the plane! Gunn banks around, having spotted a survivor, who looks oddly like the driver of the boat Gunn blew up. He shoots at Gunn's plane with a pistol, and by some miracle actually hits it! This makes the plane lose control, and the Landing Gear jams for some reason, so Gunn does what you usually do when the Landing gear doesn't work, land the plane on its side! It explodes, and the bad guy chucks his gun up in the air to celebrate, then notices a shadow around him... Yep, Gunn is on a parachute! The bad guy gets kicked in the nose (another scene which caused my brother much hilarity on a later re-read), and Gunn picks up the pistol, bravely shooting the unarmed guy in the back as he runs away. Gunn celebrates his victory and doesn't notice an UZI pointed right at the back of his head. Someone goes "Drop your weapon Mr Gunn, I do not believe we've met". Gunn is captured and placed in a hut. He wakes up, tied to a chair, and spots a time-bomb that is about to go off! I had planned to make this page the start of a third act to the story, called "P*O*W", and probably ripping-off The Great Escape. But that would have required distinctive characters - too much work! There are two old rifles in the hut, one with a bayonet. Gunn wriggles, makes the chair fall over, and somehow flicks this rifle up in the air. It bounces off the walls of the room (or edges of the panel!) and comes down bayonet-first on the ropes. A dramatic representation of the timer appears on the panel edges as he struggles free and runs for it, with 2 seconds left! The hut explodes and he hits the deck, the bayonet comes flying down and lands in front of him. He stalks away going "Stealth force, prepare to die!". One bad guy is standing guard at the crashed plane, when there is a rustling noise in some convenient bushes. The bayonet ends up in the baddie's back. Gunn gets out the 'Black box' and opens it, The Gun is inside! Three more enemy soldiers appear, two on a motorcycle combination and one on foot. Gunn quite easily shoots them all, the guy in the sidecar on the bike has a bullet hole in his visor and blood all the inside... cool. Gunn takes the bike and rides off. |

Gunn approaches an enemy base at sunset, and shoots the one guard. He rides on into the base and gets into a huge battle... which we see nothing of - it's just a close-up of The Gun's ammo counter. When it runs out it says "Feed me", which was ripped-off from a contemporary 2000AD strip called Durham Red. Gunn says "Dam", then notices he has killed every single enemy in the base, anyway. Somebody sneaks up behind him and drones "Remember when you nuked that island and got attacked by a plane I was the pilot I SURVIVED BUT NOT WITH SOME DAMAGE".Presumably meaning "not without some damage"! He has loads of scars to prove it... Meanwhile, Gunn is pulling a SWORD out of the back of The Gun! There is a dramatic small frame saying SHING!, with a bit of blood at the bottom, which was ripped-off from a contemporary 2000AD strip called Outlaw. The bad guy is pinned to the side of a shed by the sword, going "Urg", like the best of them. Gunn walks into the sunset going "Now I know you're dead". |
