General Info:

The pride of the FW fleet. These huge ships are the first line of defence for the planet of Nirisan and it's empire. Each one has metres-thick composite armour, powerful shield technology (powerful for single-layer shields, anyway), and huge numbers of heavy laser turrets, each independently defended against fighter attack. They can cruise for years and carry masses of cargo, which can be delivered to colonies or stations in trouble. They also carry two squadrons of fighters and one of bombers, in heavily-protected hangars.

It's so big that the lower quarter of decks are not, from the point of view of the artificial gravity, "hanging down", but actually have their gravity generators set "upside down". Crew passing from one deck to the other walk along "transition tunnels", which gradually spiral them round.

At the core of the ship, there is a large, heavily-armoured corridor with airlock entrances. This is heated by residual heat from the mighty fusion engines, and stores heat and energy in various "batteries". If the ship is badly damaged, the crew go into "survival drill" and retreat to this corridor, awaiting rescue with the entire ship around them as "armour".

Variants:

Seven built. Each has an "alpha" designation.

Origin / Inspiration:

Heavily modified from the original Fortress Class, which a friend at school came up with. It's chisel-like shape is due to standard capital ship doctrine, of bringing the most firepower to bear while showing the smallest possible profile.
