General Info:

A large, relatively slow aircraft that functions as airborne ground-attack artillery. It can elevate itself and move around quickly, striking targets miles disant. It can also be fitted with lesser weaponary like short(er) ranged guided or unguided munitions and attack enemy tanks, or function as a moving launch platform for guided SAMs. It has multiple quad-gun turrets that can rain doom on enemy infantry or discourage close attacks from planes, helicopters or jetpacks.

I can't remember if these just used large jet engines to hold themselves in the air, or if they had "early" anti-gravity technology (which I perhaps assumed would be invented by 2020). They were going to turn up in the old, planned re-makes of The Gun, only in those, the 30m long ones would be the absolute largest.

Variants:

Ones seen in the stories have artillery-type long-range missiles, but get involved in close-range battles.

Origin / Inspiration:

It looks like a partly broken model Star Destroyer, with an out-of-scale toy rocket blu-tacked to it because, well, it was! I acted out a battle with toy soldiers one sunny afternoon, and that became the basis of The Gun book 5.

In book 4 (made later, because my mum gave away the original one to my art teacher, because they wanted to play at being psychiarists like wot they'd seen on telly), I changed the design to mildly more realistic multi-rocket pods. And had them fight at long range!

In books 4 and 5 of The Gun, as well as in another short comic called Combat Ridge, jetpack soldiers get shot, go out of control, and crash into these lumbering things, bringing them down.
