Levels of boycott |
E |
This level is for half-arsed boycotts. I'll avoid these as much as I can, but sometimes it might be unavoidable, or the only thing I can get. |
D |
I'm only human! I'll avoid these as much as I can, but sometimes might be tempted or, again, they'll be the only thing I can get. |
C |
At this level, I'll only buy stuff second-hand, or pirate it, unless word-of-mouth from trusted reviewers is good. |
B |
Here I'll only pirate stuff, or buy it secondhand. And it'll generally only be older stuff. |
A |
Act like it doesn't even exist. |
Alright, on with the list! In no particular order... |
| F | |
Marvel Comics |
C |
Why: Too many sins to list right now. Trusted reviewers will have to give new stuff absolutely incredible ratings before I'll touch it, and even then, I'll probably try piracy first. |
| F | |
Star Wars |
A |
Why: Those sequels, and the response to the backlash |
| F | |
Disney in general |
A |
Why: Fuck 'em |
| F | |
Star Trek |
B |
Why: Fuck 'em |
| F | |
Doctor Who |
A |
Why: That episode... of the comics from circa 2011/12. You know the one, "so, uh, he has this thing called a TARDIS, which means, like, Totally Awesome Space Machine...", Yeah, I quit this shit before it was cool. From what I hear, it's not got any better. |
| F | |
The BBC |
B |
Why: Hah, they're fucked anyway. All of their original shows should be public domain in the UK, anyway. We paid for them! |
| F | |
Scotland |
E |
Why: That politician who was barking out "white" like it was a swear word in some speech. A bit hard to boycott an entire country, but if I can get Japanese whisky instead of Scotch, say, I will. Japanese whisky tends to be cheaper in Japan, anyway. Funny that. |
| F | |
Coca-Cola |
D |
Why: That leaked seminar where they were instructing their staff on how to be "less white". I think they did something woke for a Superbowl ad, too. But, you know, it's what you get as your drink in most fast food places. Also in Japan they have a lot of vending machines, and on some train lines an exclusive contract (it appears) to sell drinks inside some train stations, so they're unavoidable at times. |
| F | |
JASRAC |
B |
Why: A bit of a difficult one to truly "boycott". They control the copyright on music "played in public" in Japan - in shops, bars and such. They're on here because they decided teaching a kid how to play their favourite pop song on a keyboard at music schools is a "public performance", causing those schools to have to purchase the same licences as bars and clubs. Boycotting JASRAC can be acheived by pirating, or only buying second-hand, any copyrighted music within Japan, and going to bars where they just play those generic, public-domain "cafe music" channels off Youtube. Outside Japan, you might want to boycott or pirate Japanese music, so artists within the country can pressure JASRAC to reverse the decision. And then continue to boycott it for another 6 months afterwards, just as a reminder. |
| F | |
Tesla |
B |
Why: Promoting self-driving cars. Connecting their cars to the internet of things. |
| F | |
Toyota |
B |
Why: Promoting self-driving cars. |
| F | |
Panasonic |
A |
Why: Giving their beauty line a "gender neutral" look by replacing red, pink and white hairdryers with blue, light blue and brown ones. Also they replaced the pink logo of "Panasonic Beauty" with a white one, and retired a long-running "sexist" slogan from the early 1980's. And their ad for a face shaver played on the Osaka Loop Line has a drag queen in it. |
| F | |
Gilette |
A |
Why: The "boys will be boys" ad. |
| F | |
The Tolkein Estate |
B |
Why: Trying to throw their legal weight around over a low-resolution picture shared by somebody on Twitter. Okaying the Amazon series knowing full well what would happen. |
| F | |
Irish comics |
D |
Why: Somebody on Comics-UK posted a link to a website about Irish comics, and I thought "Oh, that looks intresting, but I don't have time now, I'll check it out another day". I go back and he's done the great forum sin of replying to his own thread, demanding attention with "Oh, I'm sorry, maybe I should have said American comics, then I'd have got a response". And some other fucker is chiming in with "Xenophobia is a alive and well, I'm afraid :(", so fuck 'em, they had their chance. |
| F | |
Amazon |
C |
Why: That series. Oh, and the working conditions and tax evasion too, I suppose. It IS our destiny to colonise space, mind. |
| F | |
Ford |
D |
Why: That twatty little jingle at the end of their ads in the 2000s. I'm getting over it now. |
| F | |
The Dan Dare Corporation |
D |
Why: Throwing their legal weight around over postage-stamp sized cover scans of Eagle on a "comic family tree" on Comics-UK. Pettily and arbitrarily doubling the cost Spaceship Away pays to licence the use of the character each year. Unfortunately reprint books of classic Dan Dare often rocket in price the moment they're out of print, forcing me to buy them new. |
| F | |
Apple |
A |
Why: Have you ever met a Mac user? Exactly. Twatty ads, too. |
| F | |
Antarctic Press |
B |
Why: Great stand you took for creative freedom there, lads. Get fucked. Send me back issues of all the Albedos and we're good, though. |
