Gotcha! comes from the British right-wing tabloid The Sun, which used that as it's headline when the ARA General Belgrano was sunk during the Falklands war. After a controversy, most of the later-printed editions that were actually distributed around the country actually had the headline "Did 2,000 Argies Drown?" instead. But around the time this comic was made, the Sun started acting proud of the Gotcha headline, and plastered it all over a pro-Tory battle bus they had going round the country in the run up to an election. At the time, that bus, and the headline itself, horrified me. It still horrifies much of the British left, the first time I heard about it was during an assembly at secondary school where one of the teachers told us that "there was some war" and the British Navy "sank a ship and killed like a million people". Nowadays I use the word "Gotcha" as much as possible whenever 'my side' can be said to have scored a victory. Israel is still an illegal occupying state that has no right to exist, though ;) |
