Characters Based on Actual Teddy Bears

Loodie XXXX

The main character, and based on my own teddy bear, who I got before I was even born. The original Loodie came from a special offer run by Comfort fabric softener.

Woodie / XXXX Woods

My brother's "main" teddy bear... who I'll have to heavily alter, because he's actually based on Woodie, the mascot of Pleasurewood Hills, a theme park in Suffolk. Woodie is mentioned, but not seen, in the original comic strip.

Loodie 2 / Toomie XXXX

An unimaginitively-named bear my mum got me in an attempt to "replace" the battered original Loodie. In Teddy Bear Wars games he was rather clumsy. He shows up in the original comic, but isn't really characterised at all.

Loodie 3 / XXXX Shrimy

My brother's Loodie. This one was a bit of a cautious "wait and think it out" character.

Penguin Fellow / Feltham Kwakk

The original one was a penguin, and the star of the earliest surviving Teddy Bear comic strip, to boot! He was a bit of the "quietly heroic" type, always trying to do the right thing, but without making a fuss. He was named because my brother and I got one toy penguin each one Christmas, sitting on top of our presents, I said "who's this fellow?", and it just stuck.

Speedy Bear / XXXX

A teddy bear I thought looked a bit "streamlined", so I decided he had the superpower of being able to run fast, like Sonic or Billy Whizz (oh, or Daredevil or The Flash, if you insist). He also liked fast cars. In the original comic, he rescues some bears from a shootout. In the remake, he'll likely be an elite driver with souped-up cars.

Mighty Bear / Mazoni Kantar

Speedy Bear's cousin, my brother and I got one each. This one looked "tough", so we decided he was superman-strong and bulletproof. In the remake, he'll probably be a hand-to-hand combat guy, or heavy weapons operator.

Shrinky-Dink / Professor XXXX Roygould

Once we got some small teddy bears that looked just like Speedy Bear and Mighty Bear. I briefly tricked my brother into thinking I'd actually shrunk them. Anyway, we decided there should be a bear with shrinking powers, but somehow it was neither of them. Shrinky-Dink was another bear who was under-stuffed and could be scrunched up a bit. In the remake he'll be a scientist who invents machines with wierd effects. There was a "Q" type character in the original comic strip...

Pie Bear / XXXX

The bear I actually tricked my brother into thinking was a shrunken Speedy Bear, actually he looked like a small Mighty Bear. In the original comic he showed up as a tank commander in the Teddy Bear Army. I don't know what he'll be in the re-make yet, maybe a cook? Also his name wasn't "pie bear", I've just forgot what it really was.

Watson / Watson Sherliker

The inspiration for the new name should be obvious... the columnist who wrote in the Boys' Journal in 1913, of course! Anyway, this is a teddy bear I saw on holiday in Weymouth, who had a rabbit suit. I jokingly pointed it out to my mum and went to look at something else. Next thing I know she's shrieking across the whole shop at her 13-14 year old son, going "MÄIKÄL THEY'VE GÖT NÄMES MÄIKÄL". Thanks for that. Anyway, my dad said Watson had a "questioning look", so we made him an idiot in the old version. In the new version he'll be an investigator who never lets any detail pass him by, for which the inspiration should be obvious... Sexton Blake!

Gund / President XXXX Gund

A big grey teddy bear we had, he had a tag in his ear saying "Gund", so we assumed that was his name. Actually it's the name of a German toy company that makes teddy bears. Anyway, in the old version he was either the boss of the secret agents, the president of the world, the mayor of Gundville, or the boss of the secret agents in Gundville. Also the money was called "Gundians". In the new version he'll definetly be the president of the world(s), and at some point hoping to win re-election against his arch-rival, Senator Steiff!

Buff Buff / Fyodor Buffbuff

A toy dog we had, which possibly dated from the 1960's and belonged to an elderly relative, or our mum as a kid. He was basically just a head with a "pad" of a body. The origin of his name is a long story. In the original comic, he was a weapons dealer in the slums, working undercover for the secret agency. There was a blue dog too, that one's head had nearly fallen off, and it lived in the "repair pile" forever.

Dolphie / XXXX Dolphie

This one was a dolphin, which made incorporating him in the stories a bit hard. Even Steve Galacci stuck with land animals! Anyway, the new one will, in common with all the characters, be a teddy bear. I'm not sure Dolphie was ever much of a character, apart from you could say his name in a "cute" voice. Maybe he'll just be a kid who is interested in marine life.

Dutch Cheese / Red "Dutch" Chaedar

The original one was a red elephant with white "insides"; ears, trunk ending etc. The new one will be a gruff sergeant in the police, an early character Loodie works with.

K Bear / Kay Kedder

The only female main character in the original played-out stories / comics. This was a teddy bear we got from a factory outlet shop called K Shoes. She was a hand puppet, so looked like she had a dress. Anyway she appears in the original comic strip working at an "observatory" right at the top of the massive Teddy Bear Towers. This gets blasted by enemy spaceships and she narrowly escapes.

Leo / Leon XXXX

A toy lion we had. He was very heavy and bounced impressively when thrown down on a bed. I don't recall him being used much in the original story. Expect a gruff bearded vet of some kind.

Hedgie / XXXX

My brother's puppet hedgehog, we had him a long time, but he wasn't much of a character. Will be converted to a teddy bear and given some role, I suppose.

Sonic the Hedgehog

He won't be appearing in the new stories, for obvious reasons. Basically my brother had a toy sonic, so insisted he be a character in the setting. Whenever one of the regular massive disasters wiped out loads of buildings, "mighty bear riding on Sonic's back" would fix everything up in a few seconds. I'm, er, not sure it works like that.

Original Characters

Fluffy / Fluffy XXXX

The secret agent who recruits Loodie into the secret agency. He was one of the main characters of the original comic strip, despite not being based on an actual bear.

???? / Kaai Kantar

When I got "Pie Bear", and briefly tricked my brother into thinking I'd shrunk Speedy and Mighty bears, my brother got a small bear that looked like that too. I can't remember anything about that one, so sod it, new character! Now he's been gender-swapped (how woke of me), and is Mazoni "Mighty" Kantar's kid sister. Also the original bears all had bow ties, so this one has a Japanese-style Seifuku uniform at her school.

Curlyfur / XXXX Curlyfur

The "Teddy Bear version of Hitler". He died hundreds of years before, but was somehow revived and started to raise an army of god-knows-how-that-works blocks of living ice, which slid around shooting eye lasers like frozen Daleks. Oh, and they ate teddy bears, so he had to kidnap a regular food supply for them. Later our mum got a teddy bear with curly fur, so we decided he was Curlyfur, but at the time of the adventure involving him, we didn't have a "real" Curlyfur. The "real" Curlyfur mostly just sat in a cabinet in the living room, doubtless plotting something evil...
