INSANITY PLEASE DOOM

REMAKE

Another remake of a long-lost Doom project, this one wasn't accidentally deleted or overwritten, though, it was just not worked on for ages and thus is now crap. You can still read the old website and download what there was, though. Insanity Please Doom is intended to roughly follow the plot of the comic, but will rearrange some bits to better follow the (also remade) RPG. Mainly the first mako reactor attack will be a mission the characters get sent on, and not something Terra accidentally falls into!

Originally I was planning to have a series of one-off badass bosses with level-ending or keen codepointers (set via Dehacked), and an intricate series of item renumberings to avoid these bosses being spawned by the boss cubes. But then I found I'd turned my back on the Doom community for too long, and they'd come up with DEHEXTRA! This is essentially dehacked with a hundred "extra" unused items that can be used for brand-new decorations, monsters, level-effect items (like ambient sound generators) etc. So I'll be able to use this to make one-off bosses in some levels, as well as civilians who actually wander around, more destroyable scenery etc.

Another recent(ish) development in Doom is UMAPINFO. While some ports have had a version of MAPINFO for years, UMAPINFO is supported across many ports, broadening the compatibility just like DEHEXTRA. What does UMAPINFO do? It lets you specify custom skies, ending text, ending pictures etc for Doom maps. One reason the original Insanity Doom stopped development was because Doom Legacy breifly had skyboxes, but then disabled them and never bought them back (and even started denying they had ever existed). But now having different skies on every level is trivial!

Of course, if I made the re-make for EDGE, I could add a nigh-unlimited amount of new enemies, scenery items, bosses, weapons etc. The problem with that is: I would! And it would never get done. Actually plans do exist for EDGE versions of both Anarchy Doom and Insanity Please (two of the former, in fact!) - but the basic features of Dehacked and Boom force creativity and put an upper limit on what can be done - meaning there's a better chance at least one version of the project will actually be finished!

The Story

Long ago, three tribes lived in harmony in the world. The Espers, fantastically long-lived and with godlike powers, the humans, with their creativity and imagination, and the Cetra, who were hybrids of both. For centuries harmony reigned, though the Espers held incredible power, they never lorded it over people, or demanded worship as gods. Eventually, however, some humans came to covet the power of Espers. They amassed wealth and used this to raise armies and take power over other people. At first the Espers didn't want to interfere, the most mighty human armies of that time couldn't hope to hurt them. Unable to take the power of the espers, the human rulers instead turned against the Cetra. With technological weapons such as ballistae and catapaults, they instigated great wars against the Cetra, and killed hundreds. The peaceful cetra were almost too scared to fight back, unwilling to use their amazing magical powers against sentient beings. Eventually the jealous hatred of humans infected younger Cetra, though, and they began a mighty war that tore cities asunder and killed millions.

The Espers, horrified by what was happening, but unwilling to use their powers to lord it over other intelligent beings, decided to flee to a magical realm in a pocket dimension of their own creation. Little did they know, their own exit from the world would greatly disrupt it's lifestream; the connection to the source of magic in the universe, and greatly weaken the Cetra. The humans showed no mercy to the Cetra who had begun the war against them, and soon turned on the rest. The few Cetra not killed went into deep hiding, forming hidden communities where they pretended to be human. In time, most of them forgot who they even were, and had children with humans - which diluted what remained of their power.

Now it is the year 2000. Humanity has developed technology further - replaced the bow with the gun, the cart with the car and the slate with the computer. After devastating, industrial wars between human kingdoms, the nation of Midgar has come to rule the entire world. Midgar had long since got rid of it's kings - old-fashioned aristocrats taxing tenant-farmers could not compete with the earning power of global technology corporations. The hyper-wealthy Shinra corporation bought out all of it's competitors, and eventually even it's own government. Under the guise of "doing away with dusty old tradtions", the Midgardian royal family were swept away and the president of the Shinra corporation assumed exclusive power.

Since the last war against Doma in 1996, Shinra has had no competition, and has only tightened it's grip on power. The people are heavily taxed, but fed with enough bread and circuses to keep them loyal. Most have no idea the ancient world of Cetra and Espers ever existed. Nor do they beleive harmonious existence, with the world's bounty shared between all, to be desirable or even possible. But a few rebels remain. A group of magic scholars, radicals and liberals banded together in the city of Cosmo Canyon, on the eve of Doma's fall, and created The Returners - a group dedicated to the overthrow of Shinra, and all governments - to create a peaceful world "without authority"; an an-archy!

Even most of the Returners think the Cetra were just an extinct race of humans with slightly more magic power, whom racist propaganda has blown out of proportion. They see the Espers as allegorical stories, legends and religious messages. Such beings couldn't have really ever existed, could they?

Out in the town of Narshe, a barely-loyal holdout that Shinra regularly has to pacify, a routine military operation is about to go disastrously wrong - and blow the bloody doors off the gates of history...

Odds 'n Ends

Terra Bradford

Terra is our hero, and the character you play as. She was controlled by a mind-controlling "Slave Crown" from the ages of 8 to 18, after being taken in by Shinra and experimented upon for reasons she didn't understand. She doesn't even remember her parents. Slave Crowns are powered by uranium, and usually end up killing their victims in a few years. For some reason that didn't happen to Terra, but it did turn her hair green. After a strange encounter, the slave crown stopped working, and she was rescued by an agent of The Returners.

Banon

The leader of the Returners (yes, Anarchists can have leaders, just not rulers. I might have joined the far right long since, but I still know that), Banon will often be the one explaining your mission, either in person at Returner bases and safe houses, or through video calls on TV's and monitors. Cor, video calls, eh? The future has arrived!

The Returners

Other members of your Anarchist group. Dehextra has a "friendly" flag, so they'll actually help you fight! Minions will have about 100 health, comparable to a starting player, while "main characters" will have plot armour of considerable thickness. Also some of them will get disarmed and captured, and need rescuing, with alarming regularity.

Shinra - The Baddies!

Soldiers

Shinra's footsoldiers, both the blue soldiers you're used to, but also sailors and airmen.

Special Forces

Watch out for these guys, faster, tougher and armed with some weapons that'll chew you up quick!

Magitek Forces

The Shinra army's hi-tech "cavalry", riding on bipedal death machines, or controlling armoured robots and drones from behind the lines.

Armoured Forces

Shinra's tanks. What does a world government need with tanks? Not much, which is why they don't mind sending them after just you!

Air Forces

Shinra have a whole fleet of attack helicopters to detect and "deal with" problems like you.

Bio Warfare Department

Creepy abominations grown in labs and bred for destruction. As dangerous to their masters as to you!
