Otaku Bar Review

Review

Notice! This bar has now closed down!

It reopened elsewhere in AmeMura as Jan Kounen, which I actually went to loads of times before finding out it was Crossover's continuation. Then sat on that news another 6 months or so before finally mentioning it here!

I thought I already had this bar on this page, and it must have been on the old version of the page, I remember writing it! Anyway, this was a westaboo bar for Japanese fans of "American comics". This mostly boiled down to a fandom of Marvel T-shirts, tote bags, canvas prints and stuff you'd see at those Marvel pop-up shops (you know, the MARVEL shops that didn't sell a single comic) when the MCU was big. I did meet a fair few cool people there who actually read the comics, mind you, but last time I went they were playing endless Youtube videos of the type the "Nerd Crew" was created to parody.

Getting There

It used to be on Dotonbori, then moved to America-Mura, the "cool" part of Osaka with loads of shops selling "vintage" hip-hop clothes, and T-shirts with slogans like "All Lives Matter - may not include BIPOC, LGBTQIA, Neuroatypical or marginalized lives"*. It was on floor 7 of some building, but the lift only went up to floor 6, so you had to walk the last few stairs to get there.

Anyway, they had some dispute with the building owner (see the picture) and ended the lease. There's talk of them opening another bar elsewhere. Don't know if it will be called Crossover or not. (It's not, it's called Jan Kounen!)

*-Fucking hell, the left are medically incapable of meming, aren't they? "All Lives Matter - terms and conditions apply". That's all you have to write, same point but way more succint and funnier. I mean, fuck me, I'm right of Nigel Farage, and here I am, writing your memes for you.

Details

It cost some money. The original version on Dotonbori was lovely and cosy, but I remember it being something like no charge, but ¥900 for a small can, so I rarely went due to brokeness.

In Conclusion

Used to be good fun, I just wish I'd gone more often when it was still open. I went to the new version once, though I tried to go many other times, when Google Maps said it should be open, and found it just randomly closed.
