Otaku Bar Review

Review

The new incarnation of my favourite otaku bar, so ya know it's good! It's no longer in the Misono building, so gone are the ever-open door (or maybe they'll reserve that for warm weather) and comfy sofas at the back of the room. Now you can sit at the bar or stand at a couple of smaller tables further back. I much preferred the sofas and coffee tables of the old incarnation, but what can ya do?

Shimapan!

For a while, there were actually two Caoff Discoveries running, both the new one, and the one in the Misono building. Since the older one closed, they've moved over the crates and crates of anime figures (and old Caoff West merch from down the years) and set them up in the new home. In mid-February 2025, they still hadn't quite unpacked them all! The master of Caoff's former neighbour, Kissa Zeni Geba, was taking the piss out of how much stuff they had to cart down the Misono building's awkward side stairs.

The mama is still usually Miu Maccartney, but she also DJ's at the regular-ish Caoff West nights, so there's other staff who are sometimes seen. Caoff Discovery is the "hub" of a bunch of current and former otaku bars which were in/around the Misono building, so you might meet staff from some of the others there sometimes!

The prices are slightly higher than they used to be, but it's still a cheap place by otaku bar standards.

Getting There

Go to Nippombashi Subway or Kintetsu station (I used Kintetsu this time, I used the subway in the old Caoff video. They both go to basically the same place). Enter "Namba Walk" and go down until you find these big wide steps up, roughly in the "middle" of it. Go opposite those steps, where the Round 1 bowling alley is. Go up there, enter the nearby shotengai and walk down until you find Matsumoto Kiyoshi (and/or "the white building with wiggly bits"). Turn right there and go down the street, past Milu Lari and into the building with arches and a big screen outside. This building has no floor 1, only a basement and floor 2! Go up the steps.

Details

Cover charge ¥300, beer or soft drink ¥600, plus cocktails and whatnot for various prices.

In Conclusion

One of the best! If you only go to one otaku bar on a visit to Osaka, make it this one... or Anna. If you can fit in the latter!

Also, Misono fans, the new incarnation of Aran, the punk-heavy rock bar once located just after the main ramp, is in the basement of this building!

Before it was really decorated or they'd moved all the stuff in. Also some photos I took of the first champagne share-around opening. I meant to video it, but the camera was on the wrong mode!

Pictures from the opening party - 16th November 2024

It was dark and I couldn't stay long due to brokeness, or drink much due to having come on an escooter. But I nabbed a few pics. They had roast beef! You'll have the frogs, with whom we have a beef, roasting us...
