GAMMA UNIVERSE

The Gamma Universe is the main Felney universe, and is where most of the "bigger" stories take place. It's history is much the same as the Beta Universe (which is close to the real world) up until 1985, when a zombie-creating chemical is discovered. A few power-mad manipulators of the early 21st century are also considerably more power-mad in this world, and they send world politics off on a completely different, and somewhat disastrous course.

This universe also features stories set in the near and far future (some of the 'near future' ones are now in the past, they're taking so long to make!). The further into the future they go, the 'softer' the science fiction gets. Also numerous planets and star systems exist which are not present in real life (as we are now able to detect planets around other stars). All the extra towns and villages from the Beta Universe are also present

Several of the stories in this universe have been re-made at various points (some more than once!). The titles in Italics are "overwritten" by other stories and "didn't really happen", but are included for interest.

Ye Legend of Felney

Type

Webcomic

Main Characters

Mike Smythe, Tina Wright, Aaron Anderson.

Description

This is a spoof version of Felney set in the distant past, when the fens was a vast, untamed swampland filled with isolated, backwards villages and populated by semi-savage... oh wait, that's now! Most strips had fantasy elements, like dragons and magic, but we can pretend those are mis-remembered "legends" XD. This is set in a time when Christianity was new to Britain, Aaron is an early convert, despite the fact he is gay. Fortunately, he can't read, so doesn't know what the bible says. At one point I started a big "graphic novel" story based on Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, but it never got past a single page. I also planned a couple of videogames, one point-and-click adventure (with time travel, and based on that unfinished comic), and one called Felneytron 1032. I actually made a little bit of the latter in The Games Factory, but didn't know what I was doing. Maybe I'll make it properly one day.

Misc Note

This was originally just a one-off picture I drew as a joke, but I had writer's block, so started a strip based on it. Also I knew little to nothing about actual life in England in that age... not even who the king was! Until I asked my brother, who had a ruler with a list of British monarchs on it.

Description

Garbled messages from a North Sea oil rig talk about something strange being drilled up with the oil, then an outbreak of a strange disease among the crew. The rig goes silent, and a rescue helicopter sent out with a doctor doesn't come back, though it appears to be sitting on the pad with the doors open. The player is an SAS soldier sent out to the rig by boat to investigate,

Misc Note

I tried to make a "base" human sprite I could later modify into all the characters for this, including a bunch of gore-soaked death animations. Then I put that sprite into Doom... it looked like a pipe walking around! Turns out the human enemies in Doom are really short and wide for a reason... Still, one day I'll bash my Asesprite skills into shape.

"The Player"

Description

A vaguely-planned videogame in the "Runabout" style (IE drive from point to point in a time limit, with loads of stuff you can destroy for points). You play as a young criminal in Middleford, and pull off a series of daring robberies, before going to prison. One mission was going to be more like the "Survival" mode in Jambuster EX, you'd have to speed through dense traffic on a motorbike before catching up with a camper van and jumping inside it. The bike would then go careering off on it's own and drop into Scum Slaughter via strip 28. Inadvertently starting off Sunita Shankar's killer career.

Misc Note

Listed to explain where that bike came from! Also the name is derived from The Getaway and Driver, two Playstation / Playstation 2-era freeroam drive-'em-up "GTA Ripoffs", neither of which was really anything like GTA, actually. In the original Driver you couldn't even "get out of the bloody car", and it was so much better that way!

Misc Note

This was originally going to be nothing but pointless sex and violence. Then suddenly turned into a major plot point in my entire fictional universe. There was a vague plan to make a live-action movie version. A woman of about 20 volunteered to be Joyce, and wanted me to add in more unsimulated sex scenes. I need to re-make friends with her, she was cool. Also she probably is really as old as Joyce was meant to be, now.

When I say "short story", I mean if all the Sci-Fi stories were typed out in a normal font size they'd be about a paragraph each, all on one page! ...maybe I should do that one day.

'Arry the Anarchist

Description

A short, unfinished text story about a teen anarchist in some suburban nightmare. It started with him sneaking up on a "lamer's" house at night and throwing snowballs at the door. That'll overthrow the government a treat, that will. It was probably going to end up being about an actual revolution, and probably an alien coverup, but I never finished it. Let's just say it 'actually' ended with him growing the fuck up.

Around this time, some games magazine started a "come up with game ideas" section, where they'd publish and reward the best one. Somebody suggested a game that was like The Parkie out of Viz, you had to murder people who walked on the grass and dump their bodies in the duck pond. I remember having an idea for an 'Arry the Anarchist videogame that would start out with you at about 12 years old, just doing graffiti in the local area, and would fast forward through "a level a year" until it had a whole English county and GTA-style mayhem to cause. All on the PS1!

Misc Note

I may re-make it, one day. Possibly about Harry from Felney, with appearances of his girlfriend Annie, and Mike Smith. Any re-make will probably be set in the early 90's, when those characters were teens.

Also I guess you could say this "evolved" into Anarchy Doom, which was set in the future (at the time) and had an adult Harry as the main character... though I've since seperated out Felney Harry and 'Arry the Anarchist into seperate characters. Mainly because they had different hair colours.

Description

When I was at secondary school, there were two proposals for a school newspaper, neither of which was ever made. This was a strip I created for the second one. Most of it was drawn in a strange 8-panel "landscape" format, I think with the idea that it would be scanned into a computer and re-arranged. Of course, I knew very little about such things in 1997! It was actually based on a dream I had, about a zombie with white eyes and a mouth full of maggots attacking a woman, who looked like one of the girls from my year, but was an adult in the dream. Quite a while after the newspaper plan fell through, I found the unfinished pages and finished it off in the style of The Gun, then promptly lost it. The last page was kicking about for ages after I lost the rest, but is now gone, too.

Type

Webcomic / some print

Main Characters

Mike Smith, Aaron Anderson, Tina Wright, Ann Morgan, Vince Jones, Julia Yellow-Spart, Sunita Shankar, Steve.

Description

This was originally a very left-wing webcomic, which I started in 2001 to make my local area "the laughing stock of the internet", and generally satirise "backwards" Fenland attitudes. It ran fairly reliably through 2001 - 02, being made at the (at the time, four-day) weekends. To begin with, it was running alongside Insanity Please, but I ran out of ideas for that, so scrapped it, and made Felney the main focus of my website. It started off with two gay people meeting an anarchist, who for some reason lives in a 3-bedroom house on his own, so they move in with him. Then ridiculous things happen involving the Conservative Party, racists, homophobes and even zombies. There was also some background plots about Aaron's mum trying to kill him (better to be a murderer than to have the "shame" of a gay son), and Ann questioning her sexuality in reverse (she thinks she's a lesbian, but actually likes Mike too). Mike was "straight", but in a later storyline he got a boyfriend anyway.

The comics dropped off through 2003, being replaced by Private Eye-style "newspaper cuttings", and deliberately sick and offensive pictures. I was desperately trying to "shock" people, and get the local paper to write about it. There was very little made in 2004, and in 2005 I tried to revive it, after the boss of the Commission for Racial Equality suggested creating segregated schools (well, we can't all be good at our jobs). That didn't last very long, and it returned to scribbled nonsense. Then ended.

In 2006, I was going to University, and just assumed there would be a weekly on-campus paper with an active cartoons section, like the University of Alberta's "Gateway" (where the webcomic Deathworld, now Fudda Comix, first appeared), so I created a new version of Felney to publish in it. Actually, the student paper was called The Linc, and managed to produce about four issues in the three years I was there. I sent them the first issue of New Felney (which was also the second or third thing I'd ever drawn in my current art style, it's a bit of a mess). They didn't even reply to me XD.

LOTS of New Felney scripts have been written. Hopefully I will draw them one day, alongside "flashback" strips, re-telling the story from 2001 - 2005. The latter will probably be a print exclusive.

Status

Old one finished. New one "ongoing", slowly! The older strips ("Classic Felney") are overwritten in the continuity by re-told 2001 - 2005 strips, which are being made even more slowly. I might put them out as a book one day.

Location

New Version, Old Version.

Misc Note

In the very first Old Felney strip, Felney was a totally fictional village. In all others, it "replaced" the real village of Little Downham, about 5 miles west of Ely. From strip 17 of New Felney onwards, it is again fictional, this time located down Quanea Drove, to the east of Ely, and roughly "opposite" Stuntney, on the Soham Road. The area is 'rearranged' a little, and there's a big dyke that runs past Felney which is not there in real life.

Felney remains the "main" strip of The Felney Universe (as you can tell from the name). As well as being the home of Mike, Aaron and Tina, it was also the nearest "major" built-up area to the 1996 zombie outbreak. Also Steve Gunn lives down Kitchener Drove, which leads to the village. When I was making Sexton Blake stories, I was going to reveal that he originally came from Felney (apparently the original stories hinted that he came from 'rural Cambridgeshire', but they were written by 200-odd different people over 70-odd years). Also, in XXput here laterXX, Andy Fox lives down Cauliflower Drove, which is another road leading out of Felney.

Cauliflower Drove is also the setting of a famous(ish) story around Cambridgeshire called Cauliflower Drove (not surprisingly), which was originally serialised on the ely.org.uk website. I think it was paywalled back in the day (heady stuff for 1998!) but can now be read in all it's, erm, glory for free! The original story was always a bit vague about where Cauliflower Drove actually is, so I just "claimed" it for Felney!

Please don't talk to me about... MR BARRISTER JOHN BAROSA!

The Felney characters and Yaxley Farcett win a trip to the south of France, and mayhem ensues. Shame I had no ideas for what that mayhem would actually be!

"Posh 'n Becks" were all over the papers at the time, so one idea I did have was for them to be killed in a gruesome accident, after impatiently trying to overtake the slow-moving tour bus in a Ferrari.

Description

A bunch of very simple videogames made in a cracked version of The Games Factory (a few years later they gave away the pro version for free on a magazine, so I'm not fussed). There's four sections...

Zombie attack! - A platformer where you travel over rooftops, down the main street, and finally reach a disused yard, fighting rather non-threatening zombies. The final boss is a cacodemon ripped straight out of Doom.

UFO Blaster - Tina shoots at flying saucers that drift in from the side of the screen in a lame imitation of Space Invaders. You can get an upgraded laser gun with incredibly obnoxious sound effects.

Microlight Blaster - A very lame and nearly impossible-to-lose-at game where Aaron shoots fireworks at microlight aircraft.

Volley-out - A bizarre hybrid of volleyball and breakout. The other characters have no AI, they just walk backwards and forwards on path movements. You have to touch the ball to change it to your colour, then bounce it up to get points from breaking the blocks above you. This one's even more impossible to lose at, you can press no buttons at all and still win by accident!

The Volley-out section doesn't even have a working instructions screen, brilliant. The best thing about this crap is the game over screen on the zombie section... which I vaguely recall was based on a game advert from the PS1 era.

Sunita Shankar, Sunita's Boyfriend

Description

After a lot of whinging in the press about how the game "Manhunt" had supposedly been used by someone to "train" for a real-life murder, I decided to make my own version! But as it would have to be done in Multimedia Fusion II, with cartoony, top-down graphics, I had to make it sick and offensive in other ways.I decided to make the main character a transsexual Asian, called Sunita. Initially she was going to be an asylum seeker too, but I later decided it would also offend damp lefties if I made her a patriotic Brit. The levels would see you killing Foxhunters, Freemasons and quack, gay-curing "Doctors", in order to rescue your boyfriend. After I discovered the comic High Maintenance, I decided to create a Scum Slaughter comic instead, based loosely on a low-budget film called "Hunting Humans". The first 20 pages where the result. Then I saw "Sin City"...

Status

Online and readable, overwritten in the continuity by the re-re-make. The "final" (and unfinished) storyline is probably the best, and most sick, one out of both original versions. An EDL-type dad, who obviously hates Islamic "honour killings", finds out his son is dating an Indian transsexual, so decides to drag him down his mate's grotty farm and batter him with lead pipes until he turns straight. Sunita starts to infiltrate the farm and massacre everybody. Later the son was going to be taken to a "pray away the gay" church and finally a vivisection lab.

Partially lost! Several pages are currently missing!

Location

Begin the old version here!

Misc Note

I periodically get the urge to make the original videogame anyway, even though the Scum Slaughter comic has been 'overwritten' in the storyline by the new one. The unfinished boyfriend-rescuing story was going to read like it was a videogame, which was a bit crap. I ought to have written it better! In fact, it was the meandering nature of (the) Scum Slaughter(s) that finally persuaded me that I ought to be writing scripts for my comics and not just making them up as I go along.

...and started this instead! Still following the idea of an Asian transsexual patriotic serial killer, this time it's in grim black, white and red. Also she's mostly switched from guns to bladed weapons, so she can look her victims in the eye, and let them know why they're being 'done'! Also her boyfriend has been replaced by a semi-retired prostitute called Bev. It has no real storyline, it's just a series of self-contained brutal killings. The story was planned to move through the years, with Sunita getting older and more "sought after" by the police. Eventually it was going to end up in the 2014 revolution. The story of that will now be told in Felney instead... eventually!

Status

Online and readable. I also made a print comic, though it had nothing extra (and was fully black and white, so the gore didn't look as cool). That comic was initially £1.10, reduced within a few hours to £1. Later it was sold at cons for 50p, 20p and finally 10p. I still ended up with loads left over, so slung them in the recycling bins at work.

Overwritten in the continuity by the re-re-make

Location

Begin it here.

Misc Note

I later had a vague idea for a videogame which would be like a black-and-white GTA3, only you'd have to Manhunt-style stalk-'n-kill various people in locations around the city to get at the bosses. The bosses would be real-life celebrities and politicians, such as TV hosts Richard and Judy, who I hated because they criticised TATU, and obviously any criticism must have been motivated by homophobia and not by, say, the fact they sound like a crappier Birthday Massacre.

Though I doubt Richard and Judy even know who The Birthday Massacre are, let's be honest here.

Description

I wanted to re-make Scum Slaughter as a comic, but then I started to make Kestrel paperbacks, which about special forces operators and cowboys blowing away baddies... but I also found about about Sean Hutson and his gore-soaked tomes, so why not do Scum Slaughter as a Kestrel, too? At least it'll be out of me system.

Once again, it will feature Sunita Shankar fighting with her gender identity and murdering scummy people with a variety of bladed weapons. Though I have, in the intervening years, become incredibly transphobic, so she will probably presented more in the light of those characters in woke webcomics who turn into demons and burn people to death for saying "I support women's rights but do you have to-", or something innocuous like that. Only presented as if that was happening in the real world, with attendant "am I the baddie?" vibes.

("Vibes" is scummy tekiseigo that that kind of people use.)

(Also none of them have the self-awareness to wonder if they are the baddies, let's be honest, here.)

The plot will likely be a mixture of both comics, it opens with Sunita killing a random guy just because he had bumper stickers she doesn't like. Then she'll rub out a chav, then her boyfriend will get kidnapped to be beaten straight, so she'll rescue him.

GTA3, But set in the fens! Once upon a time several of my stories revolved around the assumption this would be made, but I've since moved away from it, as that's incredibly unlikely. Originally, I planned to create it in a programme called Multimedia Fusion 3D, which was due for release in "2006". However, the 2D Multimedia Fusion 2 was delayed until 2006, and MMF3D appears to have been cancelled. If this does get made at all it will probably be done in Unity, a 3D game engine that I purchased for £150, about a month before the same version was released for free (>.<), or perhaps this new Unreal 4 engine you can "rent". Anyway, you play as the same character from The Getaway Driver, who goes to prison for 10 years at the end of that game. You get out in 2001 and head to the fens, to hide from your vengeful former gang. Soon you meet Stu out of Zombie Shock Massacre, who now lives in Ely, and start working for him. Also, some missions revolve around Sunita and Bev from Scum Slaughter, who come on Holiday in Felney, and fall in love during thier stay (which explains why they are suddenly a couple between stories 3 and 4 of Scum Slaughter!). Description

This could be forgiven for being "my ripoff of Jurassic Park". But it was actually based on a dream I had (which was probably inspired by watching Jurassic Park). Basically there's a giant zoo on an island, it's opening day and all happy people are strolling around, then suddenly a software bug makes all the cages open, letting out all sorts of lions and alligators to massacre people. There was also some sort of highly-unethical experimenting going on. Or at least that was my reasoning for why one of the tigers could talk.

Anyway the next day at school I started designing videogames I could make, based on this dream. One had a couple of platform levels, with a driving section in the middle, using Battlezone-like wireframe. It also introduced "Betmunks", giant beetle-like creatures with the intelligence and dexterity of monkeys. And a propensity for killing humans on sight. One of the "Learning Support Assistants" (the spare teachers who helped special needs kids, a bunch of us nerds used to hide in their office at playtime, to avoid the bullies) asked what I was drawing, so I had to describe the game in non-violent terms, saying the animals were simply "scared of the engine" of the tank. Also, I had absolutely no ability to make videogames at the time.

Later on, we had to do a test in English, where the last part was to write our own continuation of a passage, which was obviously about a guy trying to catch a runaway, dangerous horse in Victorian times. I just wrote a The Zoo story, where I was a lone survivor and got rescued by a helicopter during a massive stampede of assorted animals (including some horses). I still remember the teacher's comment being "This didn't continue the passage at all"!

In the dystopian nightmare of 2015 Britain (the police were armed and David Blunkett was PM), you played as an Anarchist called Harry. You and your friends Jack (a stoner), Annie (a hacker) and Tina (a teenage girl who hangs out with you) have to fight the police and army after you accidentally kill loads of cops during a botched "sabotage" mission against a polluting oil company. It turns out the army and FBI (who are operating in Britain for some reason) have captured a flying saucer, and are planning to use derived alien technology to invade the alien planet (the aliens are, of course, peaceful and utopian... and have super-powerful weapons).

The wad was very nearly finished (it needed one more level and a few extra graphics) when I used a thing called Inkworks to change some of the colour schemes (not because I needed to, but because I could). I then saved the edited Inkworks wad "over" the Anarchy Doom wad, thinking it would "put the colourmap in". Instead it just overwrote it, so I lost all my work. Naturally I hadn't backed anything up!

I decided to transfer Anarchy Doom to the Gamma Universe today (that is, the 14th of August 2014!). 2015 is after "The Great Revolution", which leads to the British police being regularly armed, tougher prison sentences, mass crackdowns on petty crime and gang violence, a return of the death penalty and a points-based immigration system. Anarchists would understandably be unhappy with such policies, and want to overthrow the government. Anarchy Doom was originally going to end with you defeating the new deadly police robot and having sex with Annie, but now I'll say it ended with the main character being executed, Jack going to prison and Tina and Annie renouncing anarchism and running away (they never did anything illegal in the wad). And the aliens? Well... Jack can get some gooood shit.

Status

I almost finished it, then screwed up and deleted it. I aim to re-make it three times. One "directly", which much the same plot, just better sprite work and levels. The second re-make will be more realistic and will have totally different characters, and the third will be a Genshiken fanfic, only set in England in 2010. It'll make sense when you play it!

Location

deleted... 23 years ago.

Misc Note

Actually, I found a few of the files from the old website about it, and it was supposed to be set in 2005, not 2015, but let's retcon that. Also David Blunkett and the rest of the warmongering traitors from New Labour had all twitched their last, slumped-against a blood-soaked wall, by the end of 2014.

A re-make of the above with better mapping, graphics and dehacked work. This time with Boris Johnson as PM... though he too is likely to have been left as a stain on a wall by the end of the 2014 revolution (he did cause a frivolous court case against Babestation, a porn channel that was being taken to court for showing porn, to be thrown out, though - and may have been rewarded with his life for such signal service to the nation).

The Gun (Original Version)

Set in

2020-2023

Created in

1997 - 2000

Type

Drawn comic

Main Characters

Steve Gunn, Sue Jackson, Jake, Cara Loft

Description

My first "serious and adult" comic. Those two terms being used very relatively! It is about World War 3, fought between 2020 and 2023 by two huge multinational armies named Wolf Force and Stealth Force. These were inspired by numerous 80's / 90's toy ranges with multinational "goodies" and "baddies" - the main direct inspiration being the factions of Airfix Junior. I knew basically nothing about modern weapons or geopolitics, so most of these comics were basically "WW2-with-modern-tech" stories mixed with whatever action movie my brother and I had just watched (usually James Bond). There was also some wierd sci-fi in there like orbital lasers, mecha, huge hover-ships, zombies and giant mutant ants - these parts inspired mostly by the Command and Conquer games.

It actually evolved out of a "game" I played where I rode up and down the street, shooting water at swarms of mosquitoes. Later I'd pretend to be a "mecha" and march up the garden, shooting at set-up toy soldiers with a water pistol, which knocked them flying and was thus a "rapid fire grenade launcher". Once the comic got going Robert (of Anti-Bully fame), my brother and I would also play "The Gun" the garden, which mostly involved shooting endless rounds at hordes of imaginary baddies, who were apparently just banzai charging us. Sometimes we'd be "wounded" for about 2 minutes, recovering from gunshot wounds with amazing rapidity! These games also introduced pistol-sized laser guns called "vaporisers", which could destroy a tank or plane in one shot, but those never made it into the comic.

As my knowledge of the military mostly came from spy movies and videogames, these two armies are completely bizarre, with soldiers fighting as infantry one day and jumping into jets to be fighter pilots the next. Steve Gunn, the main character, flies planes and helicopters, serves on a ship and fights as a footsoldier throughout the stories, switching branches at the drop of a hat. He also pilots a mecha in two stories. In most stories he ends up behind enemy lines alone, so just goes around randomly shooting people and blowing things up until he stumbles upon his own side again. The soldiers of both sides arm themselves with whatever random weaponary they want, with micro-uzis, desert eagles, pump shotguns and many M-16's and AK-47's in evidence (No SA-80's, oddly, I guess they aren't in enough action movies!). A few guys even carry chainsaws into battle! Steve Gunn himself carries The Gun of the title, a machine pistol with a bottomless cli-(offended American noises) ...magazine, a grenade launcher and a flamethrower with a supply of impossibly-compressed napalm in a container the size of a Jetboil tank. It even has a sword stashed inside it! This weapon was inspired by that piece of cinematic brilliance, Robocop 3!

I also had no knowledge of military ranks, beyond Private - Corporal - Sergeant, so Steve Gunn receives a nebulous promotion to "officer", at the end of a story where he's in command of 2000 men charged with invading a major city! Also those are army ranks, but in these stories all branches use them. I made 11 books in all, with several other stories started and either abandoned or lost (odd pages of a few survive). One story which I did want to continue (it was about zombies in a swamp!) found it's way into my mum's possession, so she read it out in this fake-awestruck voice, then gave it to my art teacher so they could "analyse" me. Silence of The Lambs ruined an entire generation of middle-aged women, didn't it? Book 12 (numbered 11) was going to be the last one, and was to end with Steve Gunn sword fighting the "tyrant" in charge of Stealth Force. But it never got made.

Status

Abandoned. Overwritten in the continuity by the final re-make.

Misc Note

My first comic with a "proper" "plot", though that was still wafer-thin. Also one of my first with an original, named character who wasn't directly based on me, or somebody I knew. When I showed my brother the first book, he said it was the best comic he'd ever read. He needed to read more comics, evidently.

The logo of "Wolf Force" coincidentally looked very similar to the logo of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, which the bullies at school just loved. Me, the kid who "didn't care about football" "secretly supported" a "crap" team (read: one not named "Manchester United")! Quite how putting their logo in a crappy comic was "support", I don't know. (Actually I'm West Ham if anything).

Created in

2004 (cancelled) / 2005 (cancelled again)

Type

Web / Print comic

Main Characters

Steve Gunn, Sue Jackson

Description

Two re-makes of The Gun, which were both pretty similar. They were intended to be in full colour, and sold as "graphic novels", as well as put online. The only real difference was that the first one was semi-parodic, and the second a bit more serious. I got quite far along with the second one, before I lost a lot of work in a crash. It may even have become the "definitive edition", if I'd carried on!

Both versions had only a very vague backstory (just like the original). The two multinational armies were still called Wolf Force and Stealth Force, the former being "Anarchist" or "Socialist", who had won a revolution, and the latter being capitalists wanting to take the world back. The first story was going to follow the plot of the first book of the original The Gun pretty closely.

The Gun re-re-re-make

Set in

2020-2023

Created in

2010

Type

Print comic

Main Characters

Steve Gunn, Sue Jackson, Jake Lambert

Description

This was a significantly altered attempt at creating the definitive version of The Gun. I originally planned to create two versions - one in black and white, "Commando" style, for an A5 comic called The Dragonfly. There was also going to be a gory, sweary and more political full-colour version for an A4 comic called The Tigershark. This one had a significantly more detailed back-story, where the "great revolution" of 2014 overthrows the government of the orwellian European Union. The leaders of this government go into hiding in the Middle East and, through pandering to radical Islam (and brainwashing), manage to raise a new army, obeying thier own "religion" of national unification. This army becomes known as Stealth Force, and it carves out a huge empire in Asia and Africa, before the United Nations Army (UNA, no more Wolf Force!) is formed, to oppose it. Steve Gunn is a soldier in this army.

Abandoned. Overwritten in the continuity by the final re-make

Location

I'll upload what was done, one day.

Misc Note

Some of the art from this was re-used in the final version. The first few episodes of the final version were also heavily based on the script for this version.

Though "Wolf Force" was done away with, I paid tribute to it by having The Great Revolution of 2014 kick off in Wolverhampton, and people adopting a corrupted logo of the town's football team as the logo of the revolution.

...why?

Description

The final version of The Gun. This time told in 5 - page episodes, broken up into "books". The backstory is similar to the re-re-re-make, except the enemy are now called Intersoc (International Society - standing for the abolition of the nation-state), and evolved from Eurosoc, the orwellian government which ruled the European Union from 2008 - 2014. Steve Gunn is again a soldier in the British Army, and finds "The Gun" while out on a scouting patrol. He continues to use it, in favour of the standard UNA "Ripper" rifle, in order to prove it's worth to his superiors. This just leads to him being seen as a troublemaker and rebel.

The J Zone

Set in

Created in

1998 (probably)

Type

Drawn comic

Main Characters

Sue Jackson, Crow.

Description

The first of many spinoffs from The Gun (and one of the few to actually be finished!). This follows Sue Jackson, Steve Gunn's friend, as she goes on a solo mission, like a secret agent (even though they're both just in the infantry ((well, usually))). The plot is a barely-sensical ripoff of Goldeneye, with even more action scenes. Stealth Force steal an experimental helicopter (Sue finds out about this because some totally unrelated enemy soldiers drop a tape out of the window of thier car as it crashes), and copy it. Sue goes to Russia, is attacked by the helicopters, and shoots down these "experimental advanced new ewapons" with amazing ease. Then she totally coincidentally stumbles upon a satellite-based laser weapon called Goldshark, which was a Russian secret weapon that Stealth Force took over. They are controlling it from a tropical island, and are planning to use it to blow up London. Sue goes to the island, is captured straight away, but is totally coincidentally put in a cell with another secret agent, who has been there for years (she was captured before WW3 even started). They easily escape, shoot the two other people in the huge base, and press the satellite's self destruct button. What a mess!

Misc Note

This was almost certainly inspired by the game Tenchu: Stealth Assasins. Maybe the main character was supposed to be Japanese (because Edo-period ninja tactics still work in modern wars), I really don't remember. Mind you, I probably would have been as likely to say Tehchu was set in China, the east was the east to me, at the time. Even on my first visit to Japan, I kept getting it mixed up with Hong Kong in my head, and assuming it was a really small country. To be fair, most of Japanese TV takes place on a few streets in Tokyo!

Obligatory note about how one UK gaming magazine reported that, as Tenchu was so violent, it would be given a "Restricted 18" rating, and only sold in licensed sex shops. Back then anything related to ninja, samurai and other historical things from Japan got censored to fuck in the UK. Even the Turtles! Oh well, just remember that when Britain rises, no prisoners are to be taken at the BBFC.

Steve Gunn, and some others I can't remember.

Description

A spinoff from The Gun made by my friend Robert. His writing was actually better than mine, though his art was a bit worse (which isn't saying much). These were set after World War 3, so presumably in late 2023. Steve Gunn was still in the army, and aliens were secretly invading the Earth. From what I remember, at first Wolf Force were fighting a new faction of humans who had arisen. On one mission Gunn was betrayed by one of his comrades, but was able to escape by shooting the guy 20-odd times and throwing him out of the door of a plane. Said guy somehow survived and and reported Gunn AWOL. Gunn was able to find out the new enemy and the betrayers in Wolf Force were actually aliens. Then Wolf Force started fighting them instead.

Created in

1997 - 2000

Type

Drawn comic

Main Characters

Steve Gunn, Sue Jackson etc

Description

My brother created spinoffs from The Gun, too. This was the first of his. After World War 3, Steve Gunn leaves the army and joins the NYPD... because. There follows lots of shootouts with criminals, which bore more than a little resemblance to whatever cop / action film my brother had most recently seen. I did a few of my own, one of them was based on an FPS-style dream I had, which had the graphics of Wolfenstein 3D (only blood decals splatted on the walls and floors, and bullets could pass through certain things, like crates). I didn't finish that one (it got VERY stupid), neither did I finish the one that was a ripoff of Die Hard 3. We also did one together, which was basically Steve Gunn VS Predator, because the shops were full of X VS Predator / Aliens comics, at the time.

Status

Offline, all but one of them is lost, and that's the predator one. Overwritten in the continuity by the re-make.

Misc Note

At one point, Steve Gunn goes to Afghanistan to fight a gang called C.R.I.M.E., in an NYPD tank! What had C.R.I.M.E. done to deserve such a thing? Send them an email saying "Die cops!".

Stealth Force, the enemy army from The Gun, also put in occasional apperances. Apparently after their defeat in World War 3 they "turned to crime", and so no longer merited the attention of the army, only the police.

Description

After World war 3, Steve Gunn joins the police in... Cambridge, this time. It makes a bit more sense. It's not the Cambridge we know in real life, though. After the revolution it became a very "establishment" city, dedicated to actual progress in science and industry, and not SJW-style "progress". It got an extensive underground railway network (with through trains running out to the surrounding villages, the (dual carriageway, of course) A10 is empty!). It also has numerous skyscrapers and is connected to the HS4 line. Oh, and the White, male "Subbuteo" statue, commemorating the writing of the FA rules, did get put up in the end, just a little late. Also engraved plaques depicting the development of that shameful story in the Cambridge News were put up on plinths around it, as a warning to the future.

I might very well be a naturalised Japanese citizen, and living in Kyoto, when I write this. Oh well, Kyoto is like Japan's Cambridge, anyway. Only it has loads of tiny live music venues, old book shops, an underground railway, a 99% homogenous ethnic makeup and constant, openly-racist protests by the far right outside the station. So it's better than Cambridge.

Some old granny was complaining about it on the news, and you could see it from the window of her flat. Mind you, it was also blasting out eyebeefer club choons at festival volume all night, that would tend to piss people off.

The ideas got pretty ridiculous. Everything was going to be destructible, so you could use explosives to blow holes in the decks, and could even fall out. There would also be friendly security guards who could help you / would react to what you did. And it would have a text block that would make sarcastic commentary on what you were doing.

The most ridiculous part of it, though, was the number of weapons it was going to have - including about 5 different kinds of swords, 3 types of taser, and vast numbers of firearms and explosives. There was even going to be magical weapons that would summon giant bees, and so on.

Instead of a status bar, like Doom, the game was to have had a "status block", taking up about a third of the top of the screen. This had pictures of every weapon, showing if you had them, and how much ammo they had.

Once when my brother and I were sleeping in the same room for some reason, he said "up comes the status block" in his sleep, which I took the piss out of. Another time I dreamed of this game really existing myself, the player was strafing into a glass-partitioned side-room (with a wolfenstein-like sliding door, only it was glass) and shooting a robot with the 3-barrel machine gun off Duke Nukem 3D. This dream made me beleive the game was *destined* to be made. Guess how well that turned out?

Status

Never made.

Misc Note

Planned when the only "computer" we had access to was a Megadrive. If you take out the destructible scenery, and dumb down the guards, this could be made as an EDGE wad. If I was nuts.

Time Travel Patrol

Set in

2100 (also 1968 and 1888)

Created in

1997/8

Type

Comic strip

Main Characters

Don't remember. One may have been Veronica, Valerie... something V anyway.

Description

A very stupid story I came up with because I dreamed of random scenes from it. I still regard it as the worst strip I've ever made. It wasn't finished (of course), and I was kind of bored of everything, drifting and purposeless, at that time of my life (I was basically just waiting for the internet to happen. Well it existed, but we didn't have a computer). It wasn't even called "Time Travel Patrol", that's a retcon. It was called "Something".

Anyway, it was about time travel agents, with a spaceship that could turn into things. They went back to the Vietnam war, to fetch a female American soldier who looked like Vasquez off of Aliens. Their ship turned into a phone box (owing more to Bill and Ted than Doctor Who). To travel in time, it went into the ground. It also passed a subterrenian civilisation with comfortable, well-lit cities and high technology, located beneath war-torn Vietnam. Nobody commented on this at all. They came out near London in 1888, and after some mucking about in a big railway station, got back in the time ship, which now looked like an ornate wardrobe.

Type

Written story

Main Characters

Robert, Nersilan

Description

A very short, and very stupid story about a NASA spaceship in the early days of Human FTL travel (in my old timeline, it was invented in 2100. In the new one, we are 'given' it in 2173). It flies past an alien planet, gets shot down, and two members of the crew survive. They trek across the planet, shooting anything that moves (the inhabitants are four-armed, green humanoids), get into a base, steal an alien ship (which they magically know how to fly), and escape.

Status

Location

Misc Note

I used to have quite the knack for coming up with strange-sounding, alien names. Expect Nersilan to show up again!

In the 90's, I drew up a timeline document which represented my first attempt at putting all my stories in a shared universe (also The Spice Girls were still going, and still mega-famous, in 2003... until terrorists blew up the plane they were on). It's been lost for years, now, so I can't remember when all these old space stories were supposed to have happened, though most were in the 23rd and 24th centuries. I do remember that FTL travel was invented in 2100 though, so Niagra Falls, being an "early" story, was probably in the 22nd. The actual dates are just guesswork, though!

Star Avengers

Set in

2150 (guess)

Created in

1995 / 1998

Type

Drawn comic, two mooted videogames

Main Characters

One may have been called Jack. He had a baseball cap and we always called characters with baseball caps Jack.

Description

In the mid-90's, my cousin who had every console excitedly showed off his latest game, Starwing! (aka Starfox). I got home and immediately started designing a game of my own, called Star Avengers. It had 3 characters, who all looked the same, only one had a baseball cap. The game was going to have a one-player mode, flying in a fighter, and a two-player mode, where one player flies and the other shoots, from a ball turret.

Later, my cousin, who now had all of the next-generation consoles, showed me his latest game, Lylat Wars! I also re-found the old Star Avengers title screen picture I had done (I'd otherwise completely forgotten about it), and revived the idea, only this time, I did a comic too! In it, a guy loses all his friends when thier fleet gets attacked by the Dracs (a ripoff of the name of the aliens from Enemy Mine). He hopes Humanity starts a war against them, but the government votes 90% against it. He decides to "go rogue" in a single fighter and defeat them all on his own, roping in two other friends with a two-man ship. They took off aaand... that's as far as it got. I think the plan for the videogame was going to reveal that a corrupt human was "behind it all along". Though I don't really know how.

Status

Location

Misc Note

The Dracs were not supposed to look like the aliens from Enemy Mine, but more like the stereotypical apperance of Count Dracula and other vampires. They will probably turn up in Galactic Conquest as a race called the Draka. They also had cool bat-like fighters I'll probably re-use.

Status

Location

Misc Note

The first part was going to be a blatant ripoff of an old DC Thomson story, but I changed my mind and re-started it. Now it's a story of interplanetary intrigue and terrorism, and technically a "fan"fic of Harold Covington's White seperatist-themed Northwest Quintet... with heavy ripping-off of The Expanse, to boot.

2215 (guess)

Created in

1997/8

Description

A story that was pretty similar to Galactic Conquest, while also taking more than a little inspiration from Space Precinct. It wasn't about the Starkill war, but about cops, who were based on a station orbiting an ocean planet, stopping smugglers. The smugglers had a submarine disguised as a huge 'shark', which had a double-layered hull full of ants (so it will show up on a life form scanner, ya see). The cops were all human, though the planet was inhabited by "fish men", only one of these is seen, wearing a water-filled suit.

One of the ships used, called a Tri-Gun (because it has 3 guns, though otherwise it's like a space van), shows up again in UFO War, where it's an old piece of junk. So this story must be set before then.

These twats at school, who were like nerd bullies, saw me drawing it, and droned "Star Cops?? Isn't that a take-off of Blast Corps?". How Did Forest Warriors Start?

Set in

2219 (guess)

Created in

1995/6

Type

Written story

Main Characters

None named.

Description

A story based on a dream I had, in which I was on a spaceship, watching a recording of an escape pod being launched. This was in blue-and-white wireframe, and animated at maybe 7fps. Welcome to the future! Anyway, this uncomfortably retcons the creation of "FW" (Forest Warriors, originally Forest Warders), an alliance of Humans and and the natives of a planet called Nirisan, to almost immediately before Galactic Conquest. Also, the humans discover the planet Nirisan almost by accident, and the Nirisonians have more advanced technology than they do.

Anyway, the main gist of the story is that an exploration ship is sucked into a wormhole, emerges near Nirisan, and is shot by an ion cannon (which shuts down the ship's electrical systems). Somehow the ship "lands perfectly" (though the illustration shows it snapped in half), after the crew all took to escape pods. Unfortunately "the professor" is missing. But luckily he escaped in his own cryogenic freezing escape pod. He is pulled in on a tractor beam, makes an alliance with the Nirisonians, and everything is fine.

Galactic Conquest

2220 - 2320 / 2361(guess)

Created in

1995 - 1998 / 2001 / 2004

Type

Drawn comics, a few text stories

Main Characters

Naraki... is the only named character in any of the stories. There was tons of others.

Description

Galactic Conquest was the overarching name for a whole load of pictures, comics and stories I did. The first bunch were done alongside latter-day Cart Wars, around 1995, but they really got going from 1996 onwards, when I was at secondary school. The early ones were just general space battles, but it eventually evolved into "FW", from the planet Nirisan, fighting against Starkill, who were aliens from another galaxy, invading the Milky Way.

Very few of the characters had names, the comics just sort of jumped around different people who were fighting in space battles. The text stories also jumped around, but (at least sometimes) tried to name the characters they jumped to. We (as in, my cousin and I) also planned on making a film. In the film we'd play ourselves, as the astronauts we were inevitably going to be in the year 2000 (aged 16!), somehow we end up travelling to the future (Russian space pirates are involved), becoming the captains of our own star ships. My cousin insisted that his ship should be an Excelsior Class from Star Trek, so for years Galactic Conquest was awkwardly slotted in alongside the original series of Star Trek, supposedly the Romulans, Klingons, Borg etc were all on "one side" of the Federation and my stories were happening on the other. One comic I drew at school even had a cameo of the Enterprise in it, The "nerd bullies" mentioned above just loved that, eagerly declaring their knowledge of "where" I'd "got that" "idea". Also all of the Lego Space ranges such as M-Tron, Spyrius, Exploriens etc were part of Galactic Conquest, too. Putting the Lego "sides" in it was mostly Robert's idea, though I was more enthusiastic about that one.

The "main" comic strip must have been about 30 pages of barely-sensical space battles, with very heavy inspiration from Star Wars. I mainly did that strip at school, then lost it. A lot of the ones I still have are about what happened after the Starkill war, with various factions of space pirates and other enemies. I also did a lot of "technical files" about the spacecraft and planets involved.

Around 2001, I started to make a slightly better story, about Starkill capturing one of FW's biggest ships (while it was mostly deserted during a refit). This one actually had a named character! She was called Naraki, and was one of the green-skinned natives of Nirisan. In 2004, I started to make "the definitive story", which I intended to computer colour and put online. I finished one page.

Status

Location

Misc Note

The folder with the Naraki story was used for YEARS as my A4-sized pad for drawing Insanity Please, Felney and a lot of the Red, White & Blue on. That story was also going to be made into a Doom wad. I made a bit of it, but I'm pretty sure it's lost. There was also a Vitalize! Galactic Conquest game, but Vitalize! no longer works. I should recompile the game into a download, maybe...

I've just had to guess when this was set, It was definitely the 23rd and 24th centuries, though.

Description

We pretended my bunk bed was a spaceship, and flew in it, shooting at hordes of imaginary enemies that were attacking us. It bore more than a little resemblance to Bucky O' Hare, now that I think about it. There was presumably a whole fleet of animal cruisers (the size of the ship was more like a rivergoing "cabin cruiser" boat, than a warship). I also drew a few pictures of it. It was drawn to look like a light brown bird with a yellow beak. You know, just like a raven.

It ended when my brother stuffed a bright green, glow-in-the-dark skull up in the "ceiling", going "wow, that was a near miss!". I asked him what the green thing was meant to be. He faltered a few moments, then screwed his courage to the sticking place and just came out with it: a "laser bullet". Lauging and punching followed.

Description

A re-make of Galactic Conquest is on the cards. It ought to clear up the mess of unfinished, contradictory and nonsensical stories by pulling them all together and setting them all in a Starkill war with a solidly-defined beginning and end. Also I'll knock the Star Trek and Lego elements on the head, and set it entirely in it's own universe (though the Earth Empire's ship designs will probably be fairly Federation-ey). It will probably incorporate all the main elements from the old GC strips, and the UFO Wars too. Oh, and the characters will actually have names!

Description

"At the end of" The Gun 2 (we didn't make that in order, so my brother drew the ending story before the rest of the books were finished), Steve Gunn died while fighting off a zombie invasion. I said he ought to be killed by being shot in the neck, but avoiding spinal damage, so his brain and organs would be intact. But my brother had him ripped apart by an explosion, instead. Anyway, he was cryogenically frozen and woken up in 2320 (initially it was 3020, but the technology in the story looked too 90's for it to have been that far ahead). He then proceeds to shoot the doctor who revived him, and a cop, for absolutely no reason, and escapes. Fortunately the future turns out to be a dictatorship, so he's justified in joining the "resistance", and fighting against it.

I also tried to make the dictatorship look bad by depicting future London as really smoggy, but by the end of the first story the resistance build a bunch of "Anti Smog" ships, which suck up pollution and pump out clean air. By the second story, the sky is completely clean. Mostly becuse drawing all the smog was annoying. Also somehow it appears the people still side with the government against the resistance, even though they cleaned up all the pollutin.

Description

A pair of text stories set around a large space station, based loosely on one of the levels from Starwing / Starfox. The Star Disc is a huge space station with two discs on top of a big asteroid. One side is a flat "landing field" for ships, the other is a giant city with skyscrapers, apparently just exposed to space. Anyway in the two stories the Star Disc comes under attack from pirates who are somewhat easily defeated. They read like videogame levels, one is about the crews of "mega turrets", which are gun emplacements with all sorts of varied weapons on them. The pirates use fighters which look like cheesy old rockets from retro sci-fi (or Elon Musk's Starship!).

Description

Stories set "after" the Starkill war (apart from one GC strip in which a new Starkill war started). UFO War 1 and 3 were about the Lego UFO's (a new range they had launched, my friend Robert insisted on incorporating the various Lego space ranges, like Spyrius and M-tron, into the Galactic Conquest universe) attacking Nirisan. UFO War 2 was about, erm, well...

The Teletubbies. Yes, the Teletubbies were an evil race of aliens who cobbled together spaceships and tried to conquer the universe, starting by diverting a comet so it will crash into a planet called Inflisha. UFO War 2 and 3 bucked the trend of these sci-fi comics by having characters with names! UFO War 2 had Lucy, a woman with a scar on her face, who had apparently been almost killed by the Teletubbies before (I intended to do a story about this, but didn't). UFO War 3 had a guy called Paul, and some other woman who was apparently a plant. She was inspired by a dream I had, where she kissed a bad guy, putting seeds in his mouth, and bamboo immediately burst out of his stomach. Readers of Norman Saxon may find that a little familiar!

Either way, Crazy Jim's was a company that had a redneck-looking alien as it's logo, and procured and delivered meat around interstellar space. They used ships with 4-5 decks, which were otherwise like space "trucks", towing a line of "trailers". Inspired by a crappy B-movie we rented once called Space Truckers. In the first one they fought against the evil Teletubbies from UFO War 2 (who seemed far more animalistic). In the second, the crew of a ship found a strange, dead alien on board and... that's as far as it got.

I wanted to do a comic strip like the movie, with intrigue and conspiracies inside the base - but that was well beyond my writing and drawing abilities of the time (still is!), as it would have required distinctive characters with different names!
